Born in Houston, Texas, Ford is the son of Leo and Mary Ford. His mother gave him the nickname T.J. and it stuck with him ever since. He fell in love with basketball at a very early age, spending most of his childhood playing with his brother and father.
During his school years at Willowridge High School, Ford joined the school’s basketball team, and his excellent performances helped lead his school to an amazing 75-1 record, including 62 consecutively. However, despite his active lifestyle, it was during these years that Ford was first diagnosed with spinal stenosis.
After leaving a legacy in his high school, Ford continued his education at the University of Texas, and joined the school’s basketball team. Ford didn’t waste any time and during his freshmen year, he became the first freshman in NCAA history to lead assists in the whole nation. He was also named consensus Big 12 Freshman of the year, and the South Regional MVP. He also led his team to be part of the Final Four for the first time since 1947, and bagged the consensus First Team All-America, plus winning the Naismith College Player of the Year and John Wooden awards. Several media outlets including Sports Illustrated, ESPN.com, The Sporting News, and CBS Sports Line also named him Player of the Year.
After only two years in college, Ford decided to forego his remaining years entered the 2003 NBA Draft – he was the 8th overall draft pick by the Milwaukee Bucks, which was his entry to his professional career and also the basis of his net worth.
Ford’s first season was impressive, with assists and points, but he was forced to skip 26 games due to an injury to his spinal cord, but after a year of recovery and rehabilitation, he was able to get back in the game.
In 2006, Ford signed with the Toronto Raptors and played as a point guard with the team until 2008, when further injury saw him transferred to the Indiana Pacers, with whom he played until 2011. During the NBA lockout in 2011, he also played internationally with Croatia’s KK Zagreb, but returned to the US to play with the San Antonio Spurs until his retirement in 2012. Although he went through several transfers, all still helped with his career and wealth.
Today, Ford is active with T.J. Ford Foundation, an organization that he founded in 2004, which helps give back to the Wisconsin and Texas communities.
