Additionally, he worked as a model and was the very first Sikh to appear in Vogue Magazine.
Chatwal finally decided to join the family business in 1999. He opened a luxury hotel in New York City called Time Hotel. It was the first of the six independent hotels his company, Vikram Chatwal Hotels ,controlled. In 2005 for his empire he was selected Entrepreneur of the Year, at the South Asia Media Awards in New York. Later on, in 2006 he opened Night Hotel in one of the wealthiest and most popular places in New York, Times Square . Owning and operating these establishments, he steadily raised his already high net worth. Chatwal did enjoy the fruits of his fortune through his lifestyle and earned the title of a playboy thanks to that, and also for dating various celebrities such as Kate Moss, Gisele Bundchen, Lindsay Lohan and Esther Canadas.
His hotel business took a blow in 2010, when it was reported that Vikram‘s crown jewel, Dream Hotel in Manhattan was planned to undergo foreclosure if he did not pay a $99 million mortgage in 90 days. But even after these events, along with the unfavourable economic situation, he kept expanding his business, opening new hotels in New York City, Miami and overseas. In the same year he opened one of his most important assets, the Chatwal Hotel in the New York Theater Disctrict, a $100 million investment that helped his brand and net worth increase in value immensely. By the end of the year, Vikram also had property in Cochin, India and Bangkok plus the ones mentioned before. Even with his booming hotel business, Chatwal still gets involved in the movie industry. His most recent appearances were in 2011 in Days of Grace, and in 2012 Spring Breakers as an executive producer.

Before the marriage, Vikram was considered one of the most eligible celebrity bachelors, and went back to being one after the 2011 divorce. He then became engaged to model Esther Cañadas in 2013, but broke up a month after that. There were rumours of Chatwal filing a lawsuit to get compensation for the $300,000 worth engagement ring, but no such lawsuit happened.
